Wholesale Marine believes that a little knowledge about a couple of fuel hose-related issues will assist boaters to better understand their boat fuel hoses and when these or their components may need replacement.
Before each boating season, check to make sure that where the fuel hose connects to the tank that the arrow aligns with the direction the fuel flows.
Installing or reinstalling a hose backwards is a common mistake. This is often overlooked or a clogged hose is blamed. Just look for the flow direction arrow whenever installing a fuel tank hose. If there is no suction, the check valve is faulty and requires replacement. When any component of a fuel line needs replacement, know that Wholesale Marine stocks bleeder hoses, siphons, valves, withdraw assemblies, clamps, tank vents, and marine fuel connectors: everything required to repair, replace, or maintain your marine fuel lines and hoses.

One way around this is to standardize on one fitting at the tank end, then use the appropriate fitting at the engine end to couple to the motor. This way at least the tanks become universal. I currently own four brands of outboard motors, and I think they all have a different fuel line fitting. My trial and error with this same exact issue led me to the conclusion that OMC and Yamaha were the most reliable and lasted the longest.
They also feel better assembled. Even more apparent were the Tempo Primer bulbs and lines. Tempo bulbs are the worst. OMC and Yamaha bulbs are the best. FYI although the OMC fuel lines last a long time the black color of the rubber tends to fade and come off in your hand and on your gelcoat…. Fuel Line Quick Disconnects
Given the general reputation of Chrysler Force outboards, I'd ignore that flavor. Anyway, I'm looking for the best, not complaints about how many there are. I've been quite happy with them in the years since. I used to have trouble with the thwart seat flexing just enough when running in a rough chop to depress the release tab on the OMC fittings and let the fuel hose disconnect itself from my tank. I looked all around and decided the Suzuki "air hose" style fitting was my best alternative for positive connections, and clean looking fittings.Last search: 38 days ago Update Now.

Installed the new gasket and leak tested. All in good now. Replaced water pump. Rebuilt the fuel pump, first time out I put the second little springy valve in the wrong chamber, figured it out with thanks to "Leroy's Ramblings".
Easy ordering process on-line. Very quick accurate shipping to Wisconsin. Impeller kit took approx. The whole process took longer than 30 minutes because I did a few things I probably didn't need to do before I found the problem.
The fuel pump diaphragm went bad so I had to pull it apart and carefully put it back together with the new diaphragm. Diagnosed by putting fuel tank up on a ladder so gravity feed of gas would bypass the fuel pump problem.
Putting fuel tank back on the ground would eventually stall it from lack of fuel. The step by step instructions was awesome for rebuilding the carb. I had other issues that I had to deal with but figured it out.
Motor is up and running!! We replaced the shift cables. Very simple and straight forward. Took the old ones off, tied a string to the end and pulled them out. Reversed the process and pulled the new ones back. Very east job. After I removed the old one I flushed all the passages with my water hose and then compressed air. Probably could have been done in 20 minutes or less but I don't have to hurry anymore!

Click for details. Fuel System Basics Whether idling through the no-wake zone or cruising across the bay at full throttle, any engine relies on a steady stream of clean fuel.
Selecting the appropriate fuel components is easy when armed with a little knowledge of the engine requirements. Engine size mainly determines the size of fuel components required. The larger the engine size and HP, the thirstier the engine and the greater the draw on fuel. Well designed fuel systems are engineered to deliver sufficient fuel flow through the spectrum of engine speeds. Improper components may reduce fuel flow, and like a dam in a river, everything down stream becomes fuel starved, resulting in a rough running engine.
Engines excel with quality fuel components like those made by Racor, Sierra and Attwood.
Crucial to fuel flow is a well maintained fuel filtration system. Properly sized filters should extract contaminants without restricting flow. Marine systems have two stages of filtration, the primary or pre-fuel filter and the secondary, or engine filter.
The primary filter is first in line. Its task is to extract water and large particle contaminants, and is therefore serviced more often. Primary filter systems offer dramatically improved protection over a single filter system alone. If your inboard or outboard does not currently incorporate a primary filter, an aftermarket model can easily be installed. Be sure to select a primary filter also called a fuel water separating filter that is sufficient to handle the engine flow rate at full throttle.
Next in line are Secondary filterstypically located just before the fuel pump, carburetor or injectors. Secondary filters function as a last chance trap to rid fuel of grit and debris, and are usually specific to OM Original Manufacturer and engine model. To fairly evaluate filter performance, consider not only the smallest particle size a filter extracts, but also the efficiency at which it filters.
For example, take two 10 micron filters.
Fuel Line Quick Disconnects
Each may filter out 90 percent of all particles 10 micron or larger at half throttle, but when fuel flow accelerates, a high quality filter maintains efficiency while a lesser filter allows far more contaminants to pass through. The efficiency also drops when filters are left in service beyond their usable life. Spent filters not only lose the protective filtration features but also dam the river, starving the engine of fuel.In both cases, reliability is far better than it was in decades past, fuel efficiency has increased, and problems like smoky exhaust and ear-splitting sound levels are ancient history.
But that doesn't mean your new outboard is infallible. In fact, there are a few common problems with modern outboard motors that crop up again and again. These will leave some of us sitting at the dock, wishing instead of fishing. For those of us who know the quick fix solution, however, these problems are easy to take care of. Today's outboard motors are far more reliable and fuel efficient than those of yester-year, but you'll still want to know how to fix these common problems—and fix 'em fast.
Cheap fuel lines, hose clamps, and connectors commonly cause problems with your outboard engine. Back Explore View All. Back Types View All. Unpowered Boats Kayaks Dinghies. Personal Watercraft Personal Watercraft. Back Research.
