Most people like the aesthetics of the Mac Pro case and would put in a newer better logic board. Doing the reverse would likely be possible, I guess with the older series.
It wouldn't work with the model as the mechanicals are very different. First and foremost you should always provide the most important detail when you talk about "my Mac Pro" If you're talking of what makes the most sense swapping a 3,1 motherboard into a 2,1 or 1,1 mac pro then it sounds like mac pro 1,1 through 3,1 can indeed share hardware with some minor caveats and limitations.
For instance a 3,1 has a faster memory clock speed MHz vs MHz of prev. One could also mix modules given that MHz ram can run at slower clock speeds It's likely that something similar could be accomplished with the 4,1 and 5,1 builds but that I don't know as I've not looked into it.
Besides the difference between those builds isn't so drastic that would justify spending time and effort on doing such "upgrades" also because the price to buy 4,1 or 5,1 mac pros on sites like ebay for instance, are certainly not prohibitive although it can get a bit pricey if wanting to assemble the most beefed up version possible before the mac pro 6,1.

You must let the computer cool down before continuing. Touch the metal PCI access covers on the back of the computer to discharge any static electricity from your body. Warning: The edges of the access panel and the enclosure can be sharp. Be very careful when handling them. Replacement Note: Make sure the latch is in the up position before replacing the access panel. If the latch is down, the access panel will not seat correctly in the enclosure.
Before you begin, open the computer, and lay it on its side with the access side facing up. Important: Make sure the latch on the back panel is in the up position. When the latch is down, the hard drives and carriers are locked in place and you will not be able to remove them. Make sure the latch on the back panel is up, so that the drives and carriers are unlocked. If you are replacing the hard drive with a new drive, remove the four screws that mount the 3. Important: Hold the drive by its sides.
Be careful not to touch the printed circuit board on the bottom of the drive.
Replacement Note: Slide the carrier and drive over the guides and into the drive bay, until you feel the drive snap into place. I think the system will just run with 1 CPU as well, right? I read that the 3,2 GHz model uses a gasket between the CPU and heat sink, as well as liquid metal instead of the usual grease.
Does anyone know what the gasket is made of and how it looks in greater detail, and what exactly is its purpose?
I was unable to find a good picture on the web. I thought I could perhaps cut out something using 0,5 mm copper sheet. Any other ideas, other than purchasing an original gasket? Is the liquid metal grease, e.

I was also reading some other material discussing the use of grease vs. I was wondering though why Apple decided to use a gasket and liquid metal for the 3,2 GHz model. Does the gasket perhaps prevent that anything runs over contacts or because the liquid metal gets damaged when in contact with air? Maybe it works with some other stuff, but just for fun I would like to experiment with liquid metal.

The difference was really noticeable in 3d apps. I use a SSD and 4 Hard Drives in the bays, if that counts as an upgrade my original drive was gb, up from the stock Yes, if you upgrade the RAM to something other than the 2GB and yes to the video card if you do 3d intensive stuff. It produced the following GeekBench 3 results:. I performed the following upgrades in stages and re-ran GeekBench 3 to get a base-line of what each upgrade offered in incremental performance.
Next, I upgraded the memory to MHz and 16GB, again populating the first two memory slots on both cards with the same memory resulting in the following pick up: Single Core score:and Multi-Core score: That is it for the Geek Bench measurable results.
Above should give you a pretty good guide on the increases you can achieve in your system just by changing the RAM config, or upgrading your CPUs. Probably the most significant increase that I noticed was the addition of an SSD; unfortunately this isn't going to GeekBench or NovaBench a score that adequately demonstrates the perceived speed increase that I see.

I believe this is likely the most significant improvement one can make to any older system to see immediate and meaningful improvements. The load time for the OS went from 50 seconds to 21 seconds, and launching of some applications is instantaneous vs. Everything appears to be a bit faster. That is it on my upgrade.
